Siding near the window - do-it-yourself connection and installation!

Additional elements play an important role in the installation of siding. Otherwise they are called "accessories", "additional profiles" or "components". These building cladding materials are made in the same color scheme as the panels. Therefore, you can always buy components that ideally match all the parameters of the main finishing material - siding lamellas (panels).

Additional elements for finishing window openings

For cladding the following types of components are intended for window openings:

  1. Window strip (window profile).

    It is a complementary element in which the platband and the slope are combined.

  2. J-Trim (jay trim, jake).
  3. Plastic corners for joint decoration.
  4. Corner cover WF.

Additional elements for finishing window openings

If the width of the slopes is small, you can not buy an expensive near-window strip.

It can be replaced by an additional element such as a J-chamfer. It also has another name: "wind bar" or "wind board". This type of component is often used in conjunction with a finishing strip and soffits.

To install the siding, you will need the following tools:

  • battery-powered screwdriver;
  • scissors for metal;
  • knife-cutter. With this tool, lines are drawn on the profile (with pressure) along which the siding is bent or unbent;
  • jigsaw;
  • tape measure;
  • square metal or wooden;
  • simple pencil.

Basic tools for siding installation

It is recommended to use cotton gloves during work. Their presence is especially important when installing vinyl siding with a grooved surface, as stains can remain on it, which will be difficult to remove.

Rules for installing siding

The principles for installing additional elements of metal and vinyl siding are the same. The design of window and door openings has its own peculiarity: in these places, the facing material will always be affected by temperature changes (heat from the house and cold air from the street). Therefore, it is extremely important to take into account the thermal deformation coefficient of the finishing material and follow the rules for fixing panels and profiles.

When heating or cooling the siding, expansion-contraction forces begin to act in it, so the panel is either lengthened or shortened. The degree of deformation depends on the coefficient of thermal expansion of a given material. Products from different manufacturers have different rates of thermal expansion. Therefore, starting the installation, you need to use the information on the technical characteristics of the material that was not found in extraneous sources, but the data of the manufacturer (indicated in the product passport).

Siding installation requirements

On average, all siding manufacturers' instructions have a lot in common. Therefore, the installation rules remain unchanged, which must be strictly observed.

  1. Self-tapping screws are screwed exactly into the center of the hole on the nail strip (on the perforated strip that each element of the finishing material is equipped with).
  2. There should be a gap of 1-1.

    5 mm between the screw head and the siding. It is necessary for free movement of the panel during the action of compression-expansion forces.

  3. When locking connection of additional elements and panels, press from top to bottom.
  4. Do not attach siding in places where there are no holes provided for this purpose.
  5. It is not recommended to store vinyl siding at temperatures below -5 ° C and above +25 ° C.

  6. Nail strips that are next to each other must not adjoin each other. A gap of at least 6 mm is required between them. To ensure it, the nail strips are cut with metal scissors.

Siding attachment

In order for all elements of the house to have a neat appearance, their cutting must be correct. You can use a jigsaw with a metal file (with a fine tooth) or a grinder with a disc for metal with a circle thickness of no more than 1.

5 mm.

How to cut siding correctly

Video - Instructions for cutting siding

When working with vinyl and metal siding, they tend to cut along the inside of the profile. But this is not always possible. If it becomes necessary to cut with a jigsaw on the front surface, masking tape is glued on both sides of the cut line. Make a cut and remove the paper protection (tape).

If the surface of the siding is not covered, traces will remain on it, which will be impossible to get rid of.

Installation of a metal ebb

The first stage when facing a window with additional elements is to install an ebb. The near-window strip and J-profile can only be attached after the window sill is ready. Its installation is simple, and even a beginner can handle this task with instructions.

Sequence of actions when installing the window sill

Calculation of the required number of planks

Step 1: Prepare the metal casting

  1. Buy the casting of a suitable width.

    Measure the width of the window opening, which will also be the length of the low tide.

  2. Using a tape measure, find the middle of the metal sheet, mark with a simple pencil. From this point in both directions measure 1/2 the width of the window opening, put marks.
  3. If the shape of the window sill provides for widening to the outside of the house, measure the distance between the siding panels located on both sides of the window block.
  4. From the central point, marked on the low tide with a pencil, draw down a line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the canvas.

    On both sides of it, measure 1/2 the distance between the siding panels. Connect the top points to the bottom. Obtain the bevel of its lateral faces required for the correct installation of the ebb.

  5. On both sides of the resulting figure, measure 6-8 cm. This will be the length of the shelf - the side ledge of the window sill.

  6. Draw a shelf, the width of which should match the dimensions of the dropper (lower limb of the low tide).
  7. Draw the side edges of the window sill, which after its installation will cover the lower ends of the window opening.
  8. Using metal scissors, cut the canvas according to the drawing. The side edges are folded up. If an ebb without broadening is installed, bevel lines are not needed.

Step 2: setting low tide

Trying on the low tide

If the result suits you and the canvas does not require rework, proceed to installation: the gap between the wall and the window block is filled with a mounting foam (it is recommended to use professional moisture and frost resistant). Gently put the ebb into the gap with foam.

Fill the space under the ebb with foam (foam is applied in small portions, evenly distributing it over the entire surface of the slope). Carefully press the ebb tide, check the horizontal position of its installation using a construction bubble level.

In order for the metal sheet to firmly adhere to the mounting foam, heavy objects are installed on the windowsill so that the weight loads are evenly distributed over the entire ebb area.

Rules for cutting a near-window profile for decorating slopes

In order for the finishing material to accurately follow the contours of the window opening, a series of measurements and calculations is required.

The cost of additional elements is quite high, therefore, before cutting off, you need to double-check the correctness of the measurements.

If at the end of the installation flaws in the cutting of components were revealed, you should not despair. It is impossible to correct mistakes, but there is a way to mask problem areas with the help of plastic corners. As a rule, errors in calculations and measurements lead to the appearance of gaps at the joints of the panels.

Eliminate the drawback as follows:

  • cut a plastic corner of the required length with metal scissors;
  • super-glue is dotted on both of its shelves;
  • press the corner tightly against the cladding.

Marking and cutting of the side strips of the near-window profile

First of all, measurements are taken and the following indicators are determined:

  • the height of the window opening from its inside. When measuring, the tape is pressed directly against the window block. The resulting figure is the length of the inner end of the side near-window strip;
  • the height of the outer side of the window opening. As a rule, it is larger than the inner height. This is due to the fact that the window cladding is performed with a slight slope outward towards the wall cladding.

    The tape measure is applied to the lower corner point formed by the intersection of the siding panels that frame the window opening. Stretch a centimeter tape to the upper corner point;

  • the width of the slope (it is the depth of the opening). Measure the distance between the corner of the window block and the intersection of the siding panels.

For the convenience of work, all indicators are not only recorded, but also drawn in a kind of drawing, on which all distances are marked.

Determination of the bevel angle of the near-window strip

An important step is to measure the slope of the slopes in their upper and lower parts.

As a rule, the bevel is flatter at the top than at the bottom. A square and a pencil are used for measurements. The square is applied to the bottom corner of the window block and a mark is made. Measure the distance from this point to low tide.

Using the obtained data, the shape of the future slope is drawn on the near-window bar.

It is trapezoidal. The side part of the additional element, which is the casing, must remain rectangular. For ease of installation, the inner corner of the nail strip is cut off.

Marking and cutting the upper near-window strip

Step # 1

Measure the width of the near-window strip along its side located at a right angle to the casing and equipped with a nail strip. Note this distance from the edge of the panel.

Draw the line.

Step # 2

The width of the window opening is measured from this point, the figure obtained in step # 1 is added to it, the panel is cut off.

Step # 3

Repeat the actions of step # 1 on the other side of the near-window strip.

Step # 4

From both sides, cut off the casing along those lines that indicate the width of the near-window strip found in step # 1. A line is drawn connecting the cut angle and the corner of the near-window strip.

Step # 5

Cut off the corner.

Window cladding without slopes using J-chamfer

If the window unit is located on the façade line with a slight deepening, the installation of slopes is not required. At first glance, the lining of such an opening is easier and faster to make. But it is not so. In the installation of window trim without slopes, the same techniques are used as for facing an opening with slopes.

Similar cutting and fastening of additional elements will be required. The only difference is the width of the profile used.

Features of installation and processing of near-window siding

Stages of work

  1. Measure the height and width of the window opening.
  2. Cut off 4 J-trim strips so that they can sheathe the window block. On each profile, a part of the nail strip (0.

    7-10 mm) is cut from the ends.

  3. Fix the J-strips using galvanized self-tapping screws.
  4. Begin marking 4 J-chamfer blades. The length of each profile should be 16 cm longer than the length of the corresponding edge of the window opening (the one on which the chamfer will be installed). This will provide a casing width of 8 cm.

  5. To complete the drawing of each slope, you will need to measure between opposite J-strips.
  6. The chamfer is marked in accordance with the received numbers. Each panel should have 4 lines, 2 of which indicate the outer length of the casing, the remaining 2 - the distance between the J-strips of the edge of the window opening for which the chamfer is intended for facing.
  7. An incision is made, not reaching the chamfer angle by 2-2.5 cm.

  8. A chamfer is cut along the length and an L-shaped cut is made on each side of the panel, making cuts to the previously drawn lines.
  9. Saw off the ends of the chamfer at an angle less than 45 °.
  10. Cut off part of the nail strip.
  11. Cut out the "tongue". It is only needed for the top panel.

    The side ones are made without a "tongue".

  12. Cut off all unnecessary, get a finished cut of the J-chamfer.
  13. Measure the depth of the opening. Appropriate marks are applied to the chamfer, a cutting line is drawn and the excess is sawed off.

Installation of slopes

The window will be lined with high quality only if all three stages of work are performed correctly: marking, cutting, fastening.

A chamfer or a near-window strip, ready for installation, is tried on by installing it on the window opening. If necessary, the ends are refined.

Insert each panel into the corresponding J-profile. The order of installation is as follows: first the upper and lower strips, then the side ones. If the fitting result is satisfied, proceed to the final installation of additional elements.

Fastening is carried out with galvanized self-tapping screws through the holes in the nail strips. After that, plugs are installed on the corner joints of the chamfers.

Example of finishing a window

Cutting a near-window strip is performed according to the same principle as J-chamfers. In this case, the most difficult part of the work is the rule to form protrusions, with the help of which the corners are formed.

If the slopes are very wide, replace the near-window strip with siding panels.

For their installation, J-strips are mounted along the inner perimeter of the opening. The outer perimeter is sheathed with a J-bevel, which will receive the siding panel and cover its end cuts.
