Silicate paint: composition, properties, characteristics
The main priority in finishing works is painting the facade because in addition to color, it is important to choose a quality coating.
The paint should not only give an optimal coating in all respects, but also have protective functions.
Among the various selection of paint coatings, the most popular is silicate paint for the facade. Such paint and varnish material is waterproof, resistant to temperature extremes and ultraviolet rays. In addition, silicate has other positive features, which are important to learn about in advance before painting the facade surface.
Silicate paintwork is perfect for finishing concrete and brick walls. Silicate is an excellent material, it is not susceptible to dust, and therefore it is most often covered with rear facade elements. In addition, the material is common in the designation of road markings. The main component of the paint composition is a special potassium water glass. Additional fillers for such a coating are zinc, mineral pigments, silicon, ethyl silicate and aluminum.
Paints containing metals in the form of a fine-grained powder can be considered anti-corrosion. Potassium glass is a special degree of strength, and
additionally, the composition may contain highly ground pigments of a mineral nature that are resistant to alkalis:
- Crown of lead.
- Chromium oxide.
Before starting painting work, the dry base with pigments should be mixed with a solution of potash water glass. Packages of paint have two containers - bags of paper with pigments, as well as a separate container with potash glass. The density of the liquid glass will be 1. 4 grams / cm 3 .
After applying the paint and varnish material on the surface of the facade, it does not form condensation, and the air can freely pass through the walls.
Please note that a problem may occur if silicate paint is applied to previously painted walls, for example with an alkyd or acrylic coating. For this reason, experts strongly recommend that you perfectly clean the surface of the walls before painting with silicate paint.
Compared to others types of paint for facades, silicate material is suitable for concrete and brick walls. For example, acrylic paint is not able to cope with such a surface, because it does not have special density and plasticity in application.
It is advisable to apply silicate paint on mineral surfaces or a similar paint.Due to the fact that the colorful silicate base will contain liquid glass, its main features will be strength, reliability, the presence of ultraviolet filters, a high level of adhesion, water resistance, vapor and air transmission.
Among the front-type paints, there are lime and vinyl compositions on sale. For the facade, experts do not advise using an emulsion paint vinyl base due to drawbacks. Despite its excellent resistance to steam, it has a low level of resistance to various fungi, mold, chemical components and damage.
Calcareous composition is not the best option due to poor resistance to sediments. Lime-based paints are most often required for the restoration of cultural monuments.
Silicate paint has similarities with silicone facade paint in certain respects - both coatings will be designed for any type of surface and can often be painted over brick and concrete. In addition, such paints do not require the use of additional antiseptics. The cost of silicate and silicone paint is higher than acrylic paint.
The main advantage of the silicate type of paint will be its extraordinary resistance to moisture, because it will be a big plus for painting external facades. Due to a thin glass protective film on the wall with paint, it will not create mold and mildew. Surfaces that are painted with silicate paint can be washed, and they also do not fade. The service life of the coating is up to 20 years. The silicate type of paint is resistant to different weather conditions, fires and UV rays.
The durable surface, which is covered with a silicate paint and varnish composition, is not damaged from mechanical damage and the effect of chemical acid. After painting the facade with such a material, a protective film appears on the surface - it is she who will protect the coating from moisture.
The main disadvantages can be considered:
- Difficulties during the application of paint to the surface, if there are microscopic cracks.
- In addition to the disadvantages listed above, silicate paintwork is difficult to remove from surfaces, and sometimes it needs to be removed along with a layer of putty.
- Insufficient plasticity of the composition.
- The paint is best not applied inside the living space - in the bedroom or in the kitchen.
- Do not paint stone, metal or even ceramics.
- There is incompatibility with other types of paint, they should not be applied to already painted surfaces.
Now let's go over the technical part.
The facade paint based on silicate is classified according to the type of silicate in the composition.
Group A includes compositions with dry pigments. Typically, this zinc white will act as a silicate.Group B includes paints with pigments of their calcium borate.
The main characteristics of the paint are the following:
7 kg / dm 3 .
The first layer of silicate-type paint will dry for about a day, and the second up to 11 hours. There is no specific aroma of the composition.
And now let's talk about the composition of silicate paint and its types. Today there are a couple of types of paint and varnish material, and the second will be made of ethyl silicate.
A couple of subtypes of the coloring silicate base:
- Dispersion silicate will contain up to 10% acrylic. Such a component will act as a binder. Because of this quality, diffusion-type paints must be downgraded.
Also, it is not necessary to do some preparation before application.
- Silicone-silicate paint will allow the surface to breathe, and thus air will circulate through the wall. This will be due to the silicone resin in the paint composition. In addition, such a material is waterproof and vapor-proof, which can serve as a strong protection against precipitation.
Among all known brands of silicate paints, one can distinguish:
Before applying on the surface is a silicate paint and varnish material, it is imperative to take into account the features of applying the composition to the surface of the facade of the house.
The first step is to check the surface for the presence of other dyes. The facade should not show signs of old plaster. If you don't check the surface thoroughly, the silicate paint may begin to flake off later on.
Before applying the paint and varnish composition, the facade should first be treated with a primer so that there is no excess moisture. The surface should then be checked for stains.
If there are color differences on the surface of the walls, then after staining, the color will be uneven. Experts recommend painting the facade in neutral weather, and also avoiding snow, rain and active sun rays. The optimum temperature for work will be from zero to +5 degrees.
After you clean the facade surface, you can go directly to the painting process:
- Prepare suspensions from dry matter as well as liquid silicate. Water and dry components should be added to potassium liquid glass, and the solution should be brought to the required consistency.
- Then add pigment to the paint and mix to obtain a certain shade of the composition.
- It is ideal to paint the facade with a roller or a brush in 1-2 layers. It is also desirable to stock up less paint than is required to keep the composition fresh when applied.
- The finished silicate type composition will become unusable after a day. At the end of the staining, it is recommended to pour out the rest of the coloring agent.
Like any substance for painting, silicate paint has certain advantages and disadvantages, but when decorating facades it is important to pay attention to the paint and varnish material - it has a long service life. In addition, if you follow all the rules for staining, then the coating will protect against negative factors from the outside.
