Smooth surfaces are the key to successful renovation in the apartment. This is especially true of the walls that we cover with various facing materials.
To achieve a perfectly flat surface, there are several methods that have worked well in practice.
One of the most commonly used methods is to prepare drywall for wallpaper.
This process takes place in several stages, and it is worth dwelling on them in more detail in order to find out some of the nuances of working with this material.
At the initial stage after installation, drywall is covered with a primer. This procedure must be carried out in order to prevent the appearance of fungus on the surface. To work, you need to stock up on the following materials:
The amount of the required primer mixture is calculated taking into account the surface area. Usually, manufacturers indicate this information on the label.
Consumption is indicated per 1m².
Note. Any mixture intended for both external and internal work is suitable for working with drywall under the wallpaper with your own hands.
How to prime drywall under the wallpaper? It is most convenient to apply the mixture with a roller, but the corners and places that are difficult to reach are treated with a brush. After application, you must wait for the time indicated on the product, let the primer mixture dry.
If you apply a thick layer of primer, don't worry, it doesn't affect anything. It is very important that the fixtures for applying the mixture are clean, without peeling lint and grains of sand, otherwise the composition will be difficult to apply.
To do this work, you will need tools such as:
This procedure must be carried out without fail. The main task of preparing drywall for wallpaper with your own hands is to make sure that the drywall will serve you for a long time.
And taking into account the fact that later you will paste over the surface with wallpaper, or apply decorative plaster or paint, everything must be done perfectly. Drywall has so-called factory joints, and forced ones, which also need to be repaired. To do this, armed with a clerical knife, expand them at an angle of 45º. This makes it possible to chamfer and then repair, just like factory joints.
Take a wide trowel and start applying an initial layer of filler along the joint along the entire length.
It is better to prepare the reinforcing mesh in advance. To do this, cut it into the necessary pieces and attach it to the joints, pressing slightly on it with a spatula. You can also use another method of attaching the mesh. To do this, take a special glue and fix the cut mesh with it. Putty should be applied after the glue has dried.
This method is considered the fastest.
After fixing the reinforcing mesh, it is necessary to apply a second layer of putty so that it is completely hidden under it. The surface must be carefully leveled, avoiding irregularities and bulges. The same procedure must be carried out in relation to the inner corners. This will ensure that the wallpaper will not tear over time.
In order to give the outer corners the correct shape, the mesh must be well drowned with a spatula. Some masters advise using aluminum corners with a mesh glued to them. You can, of course, do without them, since this is an extra expense item. It may also happen that in this place the wallpaper will bristle.
After the putty is completely dry at the seam, it will in any case be pulled inward.
It is important to understand that without processing the seams and processing drywall for wallpaper, you will not achieve a perfectly flat surface. They cannot be hidden under the wallpaper, they will still treacherously manifest themselves in the form of depressions. Also, do not forget to go through the places where drywall is attached to the screws. Their hats must be carefully repaired.
Drive the self-tapping screws into the material so deeply that when applying the putty, the tool does not cling to them.
Protection of outer corners is necessary must be carried out. To do this, you will need the same tools as for the inner corners, as well as aluminum corners and a level at least 1 m long as additional elements.
Outside corners are the most vulnerable spots, since drywall is not very strong. To protect them, use metal corners or thin plastic.
There are also options with glued mesh - this is the most ideal option for working with outside corners. If, through negligence, you damage the outer corner, the drywall will remain intact. Fastening the corners to drywall is not an easy task. It is best to take on a partner to help, so you will cope faster.
With measured strokes, using a putty knife, apply the putty inside the corner.
Make careful movements in order to prevent a fracture under the weight of the applied mixture, bring the corner to the intended place and attach it to the drywall, slightly recessed. Remove excess mixture with a spatula, then apply a level on each side of the corner, pressing it down. After drying, apply another leveling layer of drywall finishing putty under the wallpaper.
Note. Make sure that the corner does not go beyond the drywall.
After the applied layers of putty have dried, it is necessary to remove all excess from the surface and proceed to finishing work.
Coating with the finishing plaster of plasterboard under the wallpaper is a responsible business. In order to carry out these works, you will need all the same tools that were used in the previous stages, except for another wide spatula 400 - 500 mm, which is designed for processing walls.
Apply the filler evenly using a wide trowel. Make sure the material is applied thinly and completely spread.
Pay more attention to the inner corners. First of all, apply the putty to the wall from the corner on one side, leave to dry for a while. After that, you can deal with the next wall. This is done in order to avoid uneven surfaces.
Preparation of plasterboard walls, in particular, apply the finishing putty in a thin layer, so the wallpaper will fit tightly.
It will take at least 24 hours for the treated walls to dry completely. Make sure that the application tool is free of foreign particles and lint. Any debris when applying putty will leave such debris and leave bald spots on the drywall, which will be difficult to repair as a result.
To correct errors and deficiencies in the finishing putty, use a diamond trowel.
Such a tool perfectly erases irregularities on the surface, various wavy areas on which the wallpaper can lie unevenly. Examine the inside corners for dried-on filler that has a rough feel. Work carefully, do not overdo it, otherwise the grater will leave indentations.
Important! Wear eye and respiratory protection when working with a diamond trowel. In addition, gloves should be used to protect hands, as the float can cause cuts.
Once you have finished the diamond float, grasp the wallpaper drywall primer again. For work use a long-haired brush and a roller. In the absence of a primer, it can be replaced with wallpaper glue. In this case, the primer material does not matter, since the main task is reliable adhesion of the wallpaper to the putty surface of the drywall.
After you grout the walls, fine dust will form on them, as a result of which the wallpaper will inevitably flake off.
In addition, in the case of preparing previously painted drywall, the surface should be thoroughly cleaned. Old wall paint can be washed off using room temperature water. The same should be done with old wallpaper.
All the stated methods of processing and preparation of drywall for wallpaper are a kind of base. These are the basic principles of work that must be adhered to in order to make a high-quality decorative coating for your walls in the future.
All processes can be done by hand, the main thing is to follow the procedure and take into account all the nuances in the work. And to glue the wallpaper on the walls is a task feasible for almost everyone.
