MDF in PVC film: how it is glued in factories and how to do it by your own hands. Often you want to give furniture a second life, or just change something in the apartment and at the same time inexpensively. We will not argue about which is better - film or painted MDF, but immediately note what is behind the facades, which are covered with film, the future. The fact is that such components are much more durable and neat looking, and, importantly, they are much cheaper to manufacture than painted or enameled MDF. Modern furniture with a bright glossy polymer coating is very beautiful.
When choosing a film for MDF facades of a kitchen set, it should be remembered that even high-quality enamel will begin to peel off or swell after a while, therefore, the resource of the film coating can last several decades without the need for repair.
Important understand that not all of the film can be glued to board materials. If the self-adhesive chosen by you accidentally from the market and sticks to the surface of the furniture, then most likely, the coating will not be perfectly even, but in the corners it will soon begin to puff up and will leave after a short period of time. There are two solutions to this problem, namely, to purchase an industrial-made facade that will not peel off, and at the same time will look great.
The second option is to buy a high quality film that will have a high level of adhesion to all surfaces, even to wood.
Similar materials can be bought in such large hardware stores as Leroy Merlin, and the cost will vary from 130 to 900 rubles per roll.
The standard length of a really high-quality coating, having a thickness of 0.3 to 0.5 mm, in a roll will be 2 meters with a width of 0.45 meters.
The difference in cost is due to the thickness of the material you choose, the quality of the adhesive. It turns out that the higher the cost of the film, the better it is.
Next, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with how the accessories for the headsets are made. The industrial production of MDF facades and their subsequent decoration with the help of a film is carried out in this way.
- According to a certain specification of the products, the slabs are cut out, the thickness of which is from 0.
6 to 3. 2 cm on separate parts.
- Next, the cut blanks are sent to the milling shop, where the blanks are given the desired configuration using special equipment.
- The end face of the workpiece is machined using a hand mill, and after the production of the facade can be considered completed.
- Next, at this stage, the part enters the glue shop, and a special thermal glue is applied to the surface of the parts, which is activated when the temperature rises.
- The part prepared for MDF film, by applying glue, enters the membrane-vacuum pressing shop, and in it, using special equipment, the part is tightened with a hot film, and it comes into contact with thermal glue.
- After the film has cooled, the excess should be cut off and the product can be packaged.
Most of the production process is automated, and for this reason, the output products are neat, high-quality and relatively inexpensive. So, now you know what stages the parts go through for pasting with vinyl film. Unfortunately, all these steps of the production process cannot, for obvious reasons, be implemented at home for a beautiful and neat pasting.
However, there is another capable one, which makes it possible to restore or update furniture using PVC film.
And now we propose to consider how to glue MFD film on a facade that has a flat surface.
To perform all the work that is planned, you will need the following tools and devices:
- White spirit.
- PVC film.
- Lint-free soft cloth.
- Wide and new plastering trowel.
- Sharp scissors.
- Stationery knife (very sharp).
- Household hair dryer.
Please note, that it is really worth using a spatula only with a new one, since a used tool will still have irregularities that are almost invisible, and they will scratch the films during smoothing.
Upcoming work consists of the following stages:
Sticking PVC film on the facade of the furniture =. surface preparation for processing =. cutting PVC film =. sticking material on furniture =. trimming excess film =.
final leveling of the finished surface.
Instructions for self-gluing PVC coating are attached below. Despite the fact that the described steps for gluing the film on MDF are simple in themselves, the quality of the final result will largely depend on how closely you follow it.
- First, carefully wipe the surface to be decorated with a rag that will be moistened with white alcohol.
- Then, in order to perfectly glue the MDF film on the furniture facade, measure the perimeter of the surface to be glued and, according to the measurement data, cut the self-adhesive film with a margin of a couple of centimeters on all sides.
- Roll the self-adhesive material upside down.
- Place the edge of the film against the edge of the front and peel off the edges of the backing.
- Next, gradually unfold the roll and peel off the backing layer.
- Use a spatula wrapped in fabric to smooth out the self-adhesive so that there are no air bubbles under it.
- After the film is evenly glued over the entire surface, the excess film should be trimmed around the entire perimeter.
- Next, warm up the perimeter of the facade with a household hairdryer and iron everything again with a spatula wrapped in fabric.
- Use the same method if there are bubbles on the product.
If you follow all the points of the instructions correctly, the result will be almost the same as on factory-made furniture facades.
Please note, that the peculiarity of PVC films on an adhesive basis is the small thickness of the material. As a result, even small specks of dust or irregularities on the surface to be pasted will be visible to the naked eye.
For this reason, wipe the façade with a damp cloth and check for dust under a bright lantern or lamp before starting work.
Wrapping countertops with a wood-like film
С you are already familiar with how to paste over furniture facades, and now let's look at how to decorate a kitchen countertop. The main stages of the work performed will not differ much from the previous method, so it is better to just post a photo with explanations.
So, first, the tabletop should be sanded with an angle grinder, and the grain should be changed from medium to fine. The need for sanding is due to the fact that there are a lot of chips and scratches on the countertop both on the front side and on the ends.
Round depressions and scratches should be treated with a putty solution, and then finally grind the workpiece and wipe it with a lint-free cloth soaked in white spirit.
The worktop must then be laid horizontally. We cut out the prepared film in advance so that it will be enough for the ends, and not only for the front surface. Apply the film, while gradually removing the backing and dispersing the unevenness along the edges. When the main surface is pasted over, bend it along the ends.
In the corners, you should make an incision with a clerical knife and fit the lower piece of film under the upper one. Align the end of the film with a rag.
Remaining folds should be warmed up with a hairdryer and smoothed out with a cloth when already warm. After complete cooling, the film will stretch itself, and the ends will turn out to be perfectly flat.
It is interesting that the technology described above can be used not only for pasting the furniture facade and countertops, but also for decorating furniture, large household appliances and other things.
Basic information about the film facade
Finally, I would like to highlight the topic of film facades in more detail, as well as what are their advantages and disadvantages. Film facades are a popular solution for making furniture primarily for bathrooms and kitchens. The scope of furniture made of this material is not accidental, since MDF boards covered with PVC film are resistant to high levels of humidity. That is, if an extractor hood is not installed in the kitchen, and there is no effective ventilation system in the bathroom, then such furniture you bought will serve faithfully for many years.
Can the same be said about furniture that you self-covered with vinyl self-adhesive? Unfortunately, no, since do-it-yourself cladded facades are not as reliable as factory-made counterparts.
Self-adhesive film, no matter how well it is glued, does not guarantee the tightness of the coating. Factory facades do not have open areas of gluing, and for this reason, humid air will not have any effect on MDF.
If we compare which is better - film, plastic or enamel for finishing MDF boards, then it should be noted that all coatings have their drawbacks, which must be taken into account when choosing pieces of furniture. But keep in mind that there is one drawback of film facades - the impossibility of restoring a damaged film. However, the cost for the facade is acceptable and, if necessary, it will always be possible to update them entirely.
This time you learned about how to make film facades for industrial conditions and how to do something similar at home. We recommend watching video tutorials on the topic of the article.
