types and characteristics + Videos and Photos Modern industry constantly surprises with new materials. They are becoming more durable, easy to install and operate. So the usual metal pipes were replaced by HDPE pipe for water supply.

It is more correct to call it polyethylene if it is manufactured in accordance with the requirements of GOST 18599-2001 "Polyethylene pressure pipes", but experts say briefly: HDPE pipe.

Raw materials from which plastic pipes HDPE are made

HDPE is the abbreviated name of the material from which they are made.

Low-pressure polyethylene (HDPE) undergoes continuous extrusion at the molecular level, due to which it acquires characteristics that allow the use of pipes from it for various economic purposes.

The service life of the water mains directly depends on the raw materials from which the pipe is made. So, with an equally competent installation of the pipeline, in one case it has been used for more than a dozen years, and in the other it takes one and a half to two years.

types and characteristics + Videos and Photos The problem lies in the fact that unscrupulous manufacturers use "secondary housing" as raw materials for HDPE pipes. In fact, this is all sorts of plastic waste from used bottles to used syringes.

The quality and reliability of such products defy any criticism. Water passed through such a pipe gets an unpleasant pungent smell of chemicals.

Materials for the manufacture of good-quality products, have high consumer characteristics.

One of the important indicators is the ability of the pipe walls to take on significant internal pressure. Due to this property, pipes of the PE 80 brand are used when laying water supply systems with a diameter not exceeding 90 mm.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: the coefficient of resistance of pipes to internal pressure is calculated based on the ratio of the diameter of the pipe to the thickness of its walls. The lower the value obtained, the stronger the pipe.

Pipes made of polyethylene with PE 100 marking have a good flow capacity. They are used for cold water supply systems. PE 63 products are used in construction to carry out drainage when laying foundations and in basements.

Features of HDPE pipes for water supply

The popularity of water supply systems made of polyethylene components is due to the fact that such pipes are suitable for use both indoors and outdoors ... With their help, it is easy to create a water supply system with your own hands in the house, in the country or build a temporary garden water supply system.

The production of polyethylene pipes is carried out under strict control of compliance with the safety requirements of the feedstock.

At the exit, all HDPE products must comply with special characteristics approved by regulatory and technical documents.

HDPE pipe is better than metal because:

  • - has high resistance when used in aggressive environments (including resistant to acids and alkalis);
  • - has a long service life (on average about half a century);
  • - inert to liquid passing through the water supply system;
  • - resistant to the reproduction and development of microorganisms on the inner walls;
  • - does not corrode (important when laying in the ground)
  • - low mass of material, which greatly simplifies installation;
  • - using thermistor fittings to connect pipes, the assembly of the water supply system takes several hours;
  • - resistance to frost (polyethylene can withstand negative temperatures down to -70 degrees without loss of properties);

THIS IS IMPORTANT: polyethylene does not tolerate ultraviolet rays well, therefore the water supply is laid in the soil or in protective cases.

Quality of HDPE pipes for water supply

  • - regardless of the diameter of the product, the surface of the pipe (both inside and outside ) should be perfectly smooth. Even small defects are not allowed: no cracks, no bubbles, no small inclusions
  • - a high-quality HDPE pipe must withstand pressure up to 20 atmospheres.

Good-quality water pipes are available in diameters from 16 to 1600 millimeters.

They are then dyed black and longitudinal colored stripes are applied to classify them by area of use. The pipes are formed into coils from 100 to 200 meters or separately (the length of one product is 12 meters).

THIS IS IMPORTANT: color marking on products: blue stripes - a pipe for drinking water, yellow stripes - for gas, without stripes - for technical needs.

Which pipes are better to use for laying water supply?

HDPE pipe that is suitable for drinking water has the following technical characteristics:

  • - solid blue, or black with blue stripes
  • - smooth to the touch, no small defects
  • - the surface is marked (by embossing or printed by a printer) "Drinking pipe GOST 18599-2001"
  • - the following information should be indicated after the marking: diameter, wall thickness, manufacturer's name and strength index (PE100 or PE80)

THIS IS IMPORTANT: GOST does not directly regulate the presence of blue stripes on HDPE pipes, so if they exist, this does not mean that such a pipe is 100% suitable for drinking water. All information contains marking.

The correct pipe for the water supply network is molded from low pressure polyethylene and does not contain any traces of recycled raw materials.

Prices for high-quality HDPE products cannot be significantly lower than market prices. A worthy manufacturer will not work at a loss. When buying, it is better to compare the price of pipes of the same diameter in different stores.So for a HDPE pipe with a diameter of 25, the price in Leroy Merlin and in a regular store can differ significantly.

And for pipes with a diameter of 32 the price will be the same.

Types of low-pressure polyethylene pipes

The entire range of HDPE pipes is divided into two large groups:

  1. Pressure - designed for laying water or gas lines in which the medium passes under pressure
  2. Free-flow - designed for gravity systems (sewer lines and storm channels)

Also, HDPE pipes are divided by type. The most popular and intended for laying water supply networks are products marked SDR 26, 21.17, 13. 6, 11, 9.

The diameters of polyethylene pipes for water supply, which can be bought in Moscow and other cities, vary from 16 mm to 1600 mm. It is necessary to select a HDPE pipe for use in an apartment or house in accordance with the future pressure in the system. Craftsmen recommend laying household water supply networks from products with a diameter of 25 to 32 mm.
