Wood carving is one of the most popular and oldest forms of art ... When working with certain species of wood, carvers can make truly unique pieces - furniture, sculptures, household utensils and more. In the article we will consider all kinds of volumetric woodcarving, as well as what tools are needed for this.

You will also find step-by-step instructions for creating a box using this technique.

Carving and its varieties

The following techniques of carving woodwork can be distinguished:

  • Sawing.
  • Flat.
  • Curly.
  • Contour.

  • Invoice.
  • Deaf.
  • Embossed.
  • Through.
  • Volumetric.

Sculptural or volumetric wood carving will involve the creation of sculptures, large pieces of furniture and the exterior. A through-type thread is quite often called a slotted thread, go openwork. The technique is characterized by the removal of the background from the patterns of the plane. Quite often, this method is used to decorate window shutters, pieces of furniture and cornices. In cases where through-type processing is attached to a wood base, and such work is called a waybill.

Embossed carving - it is considered the most difficult. It can be subdivided into high-relief and bas-relief. Varieties, in turn, will require high skill in woodworking and a wide variety of cutting tools. Most often, it is used to trim wood furniture and decorate interior elements. Blind carving is an equally difficult woodworking technique.

Sometimes even the most experienced craftsmen are unable to imagine the scale and scope of the work being done. A flat or flat thread is a pattern that is applied to a wood base using sharp tools. Even a child can be trusted with these works, subject to supervision by adults. As a rule, only those tree species that do not delaminate are used as a material, for example, chestnut or linden.

Volumetric technique as aerobatics

Volumetric wood carving - sketches and shapes Everyone can comprehend the art of wood cutting, but not everyone is able to master the volumetric technique.

In order to buy all the knowledge you need, you need to have an experienced mentor, as well as desire, talent and free time. Mastering the skill of carving volumetric types of figures on wood will make it possible to realize all the daring fantasies, to recreate masterpieces of art, compositions, sculptures and many other objects. It is not enough just one knowledge of such a technique, while the master must be an artist, a creative person, a sculptor. The process itself is scrupulous and precise.

Getting Started and Getting Started with Wood

Volumetric wood cutting for beginners can seem quite difficult.

But there is no need to despair, because skills will sharpen with experience. The main thing is that you know where to start. The principle of preparation work is based on a competent choice of wood species. For example, large elements are much easier to cut from soft wood (linden, poplar or pine), since they are much more malleable, and vice versa, for cutting small elements, it is better to opt for hard wood species (oak or maple).

Another important preparatory step will be the creation of a sketch, which can be shown schematically, molded from clay or plaster, printed on a printer.

It is required to remember that without a sketch, the result will not be as accurate.

What tools will be required to work

The video about volumetric woodcarving usually shows all the tools that will be used, since the technique of work is rather non-standard. These are both ordinary knives with chisels and specialized machines. To perform work at home, you will need the following tools:

  1. Sandpaper with different fractions.
  2. Various shapes, sizes and modifications of knives.

  3. Hand cutters with a large assortment of accessories.
  4. Various chisels.
  5. Needle files.

Consider what are the working techniques to properly handle the tree.

All kinds of techniques for volumetric carving in wood

When working, the master uses various methods of planing and wood processing, among which there are several main ones used with varieties of wood carving:

  1. "From myself".

Used to remove chamfers and edges, in particular if they are placed perpendicular to the wood fibers. Work is done with one hand or holding the blade with the fingers of the other hand.

  2. A technique for removing a thick wood layer along its fiber direction. The knife is gripped with one or two hands at once, with the tip pointing towards itself. A cut is made with strong pressure on the hands with the chest.

If it is necessary to remove large layers, but at the same time there is not enough room for maneuverability, pressure on the hands is made by the body.

  3. "On yourself". Reception of cutting, when directed to the side with the left hand, and the movement is made towards the thumb.

Let's consider what materials you can work with.

What materials should be used

For volumetric wood carving, we recommend using soft wood, for example, aspen, maple, linden or alder.

Linden is especially distinguished due to its uniformity, pliability and plasticity when carving. Alder and aspen are used a little less often. Before starting work with aspen, it must be steamed for 2-3 hours and then kept in the shade for about a day. After drying, the bar on which cracks have formed is processed by cutting off the ends. The wood must be without any flaws in the form of rot, voids and cracks.

Technique of work

Volumetric type of wood carving (photo examples are presented in the article) is made in this way:

  • For the beginning is required to apply the contours of the future product to the timber and cut out all unnecessary elements. This is done by means of a chisel, and then the main figured outlines are worked out with it.
  • After that, you can start working with a knife and rasps with different sizes, giving a softer and smoother shape. At the same time, the actions are soft, careful, and also cut off a thin layer of wood. The sculpture was, as it were, painted with a cutting tool that leaves grooves on it.

The lines will mimic the features of a human face, bird feathers, animal skins, horse mane, veins on plants and other elements.

  • All cuts are made small, the surface is processed on each side. If you plan to make holes in the sculpture, they are cut at the final stage.
  • Dry and hard wood should be dampened during cutting.
  • The finished product must be sanded by the master or even left unchanged.

  • After that, everything is left to dry, and in case of cracks, it is necessary to fill them with wedges, taking into account the direction of the wood grain.

And now a little master class.

How to make a wooden box - instruction

Photos of volumetric wood carving show unusual objects that impress with their beauty. To create a three-dimensional thread on the box (photo is shown below), you will need cutting tools, box blanks and a pencil.

Everything is done in this way:

  1. Volumetric wood carving - sketches and shapes First of all, you need to round the blank corners.

  2. After that, a pattern is drawn along the general perimeter of the box so that the lid and the lower part look harmonious.
  3. Bulk cuts are performed with particular attention to small parts.
  4. Each of the elements must be carefully sanded.
  5. The box will be covered with several layers of varnish.
  6. Velvet fabric needs to be glued inside.

To master the technique of cutting along the surface of wood, you should start with the smallest and simplest figures. During the working process, each carver receives his own secrets of craftsmanship, and also understands how best to make certain elements, how it is more convenient to hold tools, and so on. The main thing is that you should not be afraid, and you need to embody your dreams with all the courage.
