We glaze and insulate the loggia ourselves with our own hands: Instructions + Video DIY Loggia - Instruction + Video. Almost all city apartments have a loggia or balcony. Sometimes even both. Many residents of such apartments do not take the balcony seriously and use it only as a storage room and a place for drying clothes. Absolutely in vain, because if you make a little effort, you can significantly increase the space for housing at the expense of a balcony or loggia.

For example, if you insulate and repair the loggia, you can make a mini room, thanks to the walls on the sides. An open balcony can also be refined, glazed and even expanded. You can install the balcony yourself in various ways, which must be decided in advance.

Types of repair

Basically, all types of balconies are divided into two types, cosmetic and capital. The first option is the simplest, does not require serious intervention, while the second option is more complicated, most often a special permit is required.

Overhaul of the balcony

If the balcony slab has a suitable appearance, does not chip off, does not crumble, then the first cases must be examined to determine the degree of violations ..

. This is necessary in order to find out what kind of repair intervention it will require.

If small cracks are found, it is not recommended to remove them immediately, as it is necessary to find out how deep they are. If there is some damage to the reinforcement, this means that the balcony slab needs more global interventions. For this, professionals must work.

If the reinforcement is damaged, this means that serious work will be required to strengthen it.

For overhaul, you need specialists with experience in such matters.

Repair is carried out in the following stages:

  1. We glaze and insulate the loggia ourselves with our own hands: Instructions + Video Cleaning the balcony from garbage.
  2. Placing the balcony slab in a metal frame.
  3. Next, a steel angle is attached to the wall from the bottom of the slab to support it at the joint.

  4. A tie is welded at the top of the channel, fastened with an anchor to the wall.
  5. If the bare reinforcement is in normal condition, then it is necessary to clean it from corrosion, cover it with a special agent.
  6. Lay reinforcement mesh over the slab, weld to the channel.
  7. We mount board formwork around the slab. It is recommended for underfloor heating to fill in expanded clay under the reinforcement mesh.

  8. We make a concrete mortar from sand with cement and fill it, perform leveling.
  9. Apply a primer and plaster on the bottom of the balcony slab, if there are metal elements, cover it with an anti-corrosion agent.
  10. When the concrete dries up, we cover it with a layer of waterproofing, this is a mandatory process.

Expansion of the balcony

Currently, more and more people want to expand the area of ‚Äč‚Äčtheir balcony. This happens by increasing the balcony slab, or by removing the top of the fence.

Due to the expansion, the pressure on the balcony slab increases, therefore it must be strengthened, as described above. This is most recommended if the building is old and worn out. There are two types of balcony expansion.

The process for enlarging a balcony is very complicated and difficult. It is necessary to make the most accurate measurements, calculations.

The works are carried out in the following sequence:

  1. We glaze and insulate the loggia ourselves with our own hands: Instructions + Video Professionals assess the balcony and its strength, based on this, conclusions are drawn about which expansion option will be the most successful.
  2. After the dimensions of the extension are measured, a plan and drawing are drawn up.
  3. After obtaining permission, you can go to the hardware store and purchase the necessary materials.
  4. Next, you need to create a new common frame by welding.
  5. Installing battens and temporary flooring.

  6. The next step is to sheathe the fence and install the ebb.
  7. Installing and securing glazing frames. If the plans include the installation of a visor, then it is recommended to install it together with the frames, securing it with dowels.
  8. After closing the balcony from the weather, we proceed to insulation and finishing from the inside of the balcony.

ATTENTION! If you have no experience in design and calculations, as well as no installation skills, then you just need to contact the professionals in their field.

Glazing of the balcony

Glazing of the balcony or loggia will cost you a very round sum. Therefore, in order not to waste this money, you must choose the most correct type of glazing. There are only three of them: warm, cold and frameless.

Consider these options:

  • Cold glazing. This is the best choice for a balcony or loggia without insulation.

It represents protection from weather conditions (wind, rain, etc.). This type of glazing uses frames with one glass made of aluminum or metal-plastic.

  • Warm glazing - wood or plastic frames, with double or triple glass units. This option is ideal for loggias with insulation or heated floors.

Such glazing is hermetically sealed, does not allow sounds and noises to pass through.

  • Frameless glazing - this subspecies of cold glazing is not airtight. Protects the loggia from snow and rain.

Siding or lining made of plastic weighs relatively little, so it will not heavily load the balcony slab. But these elements will not provide the necessary protection against cold weather, and will not be a good basis for glazing frames.

Therefore, we expand the top with a metal profile, on which the ebb is fixed and the window frames are mounted.

It is recommended to mount siding horizontally by installing a lath of wood. The lining is attached to the frame with screws. The panels are mounted and after the completion of the work, you can call the craftsmen to perform the glazing.

Preparing the balcony for insulation

The sequence of steps in preparation for insulation:

  1. The first stage - this is the cleaning of walls from paint, dust and debris.

  2. Next, we carefully check the walls for cracks, joints and gaps near the frames.
  3. Close all crevices with foam or sealant.
  4. When the foam is dry, remove the residue with a construction blade.
  5. Laying waterproofing from the inside of a balcony or loggia. We cover the walls with liquid soil.

Waterproofing options for flooring:

  1. Roofing material.
  2. Lubricating waterproofing.
  3. Liquid glass.

At the end of all work, let the materials dry.

Thermal insulation of the balcony

After completing the installation of waterproofing, proceed to the stage of insulation.

This is done differently in all cases. Depends on the material and type of insulation.

The balcony floor can be insulated along with the walls, also separately. The same materials are used for thermal insulation. If you plan to use a balcony in winter, then it is recommended to install a system of underfloor heating.

Insulation in the plates is recommended between the guides above the foam foam. We close the crevices between the tree and the insulation with polyurethane foam. After it is completely dry and you cut it off, you can make flooring with planks or plywood sheets, which in the future will serve as the basis for the flooring.
