What is the best way to hem the eaves - filing methods, what material to choose? Review + Video The final stage in the construction of a private house is the installation of the roof. In order for it to be pleasing to the eye, and all the roof rafters are neatly hidden and protected, you need to hem the roof cornice.

General information

Why hem the cornice

In addition to the aesthetic component, the hemming of overhangs has a number of important functional features:

  1. What is the best way to hem the eaves - filing methods, what material to choose? Review + Video protects the roof insulation from the external environment. If the overhang is not sewn up, from constant temperature changes, damp wind and precipitation, the insulation will quickly deteriorate and soon it will need to be replaced.
  2. filters out excess moisture and debris.

If the overhang is properly hemmed, then given the peculiarities of air circulation under the roof, you do not have to worry about excess debris or moisture that can get under the roof and damage the insulation or other building elements.

  3. An enclosed overhang will protect the roof from insects and birds that may inhabit it.
  4. Protect the walls of the house from the effects of winds and getting wet from slanting rain.

Types of overhangs

In construction, there are two types of overhangs:

  1. Eaves - horizontal overhang, which starts at the bottom edge of the roof. It is very important not to leave such an overhang unfinished, since air circulation takes place through it.

  2. Frontal - the lateral sector of the slope, which borders on the front side of the house. It is important to seal this overhang tightly. It does not participate in the process of ensuring the under-roof air circulation, but protects the roof from the effects of weather and possible living creatures.

How to hem the edge of the roof

There are many material options for sheathing the overhang of the roof, here everyone is guided by their material capabilities and the style of the house as a whole. All filing materials can be divided into three large groups.

Wooden

For filing a wooden house, for example, an edged or hemmed board is suitable. A coniferous board is best suited, the width of which will be 50-250 mm, thickness 170-220 mm. It is imperative to let the board lie under the roof for about a month before installation - so it will not be too dry or too wet. And don't forget to treat it with antiseptic, varnish or paint. During installation, it is important to leave 10-15 mm gaps between the boards, they will ensure proper air circulation.

Another option is a wooden lining . Many people choose this particular material, because it does not require any additional preparation, like a regular board. The only thing is that the lining also needs to lie in the open air for a month. During installation, there is no need to leave gaps for ventilation - special ventilation grilles are installed.

Siding

Siding is by far the most popular facing material.

Cornice siding is called soffit. It differs from the usual one in that the soffit has ventilation grilles, while the installation process is identical.

Soffits, in turn, are divided into several types depending on the material:

  1. Copper soffits are a very durable and reliable material, outwardly it also looks pretty effectively. The disadvantage is the high cost.
  2. Aluminum soffit is no less durable than copper, but it can still be painted, which means that the shade can be matched to any facade.

The disadvantage is that it is slightly cheaper than copper, but not significantly.

  3. Galvanized spotlights - made of galvanized steel, can also be painted, average price.
  4. Vinyl soffits - made of plastic, many consider the best option. The great advantages of this material are considered lightness, resistance to moisture and an economical price. However, it is not recommended to purchase the cheapest material, as it will most likely change color over time.

Profiled sheeting

Profiled sheeting during installation and looks very similar to soffits, even the material is the same - galvanized metal. Only for corrugated board the dimensions are much larger and ventilation grids are not provided, it is important to take this into account during installation, since you will have to add them yourself.

! Important. The filing of overhangs must be done prior to finishing the exterior walls of the house.

Roof edge filing methods

Roofers use two overhang filing options:

  1. On rafters - applies only to roofs with a slight slope.

For installation, all the lower parts of the rafters must be in the same plane. If you can't cut it straight, you need to fill up an additional flat board. The first step is to expose and screw on the first and last trims. Next, you need to pull the rope between them for balance, after which you can fasten the remaining planks. For cladding, metal corners and screws are used.

  2. By box - suitable for roofs with a steep slope. The technology is simple - a board, the width of which is 40 mm, is attached to the lower edge of the rafters with one side, and the other must be fixed to the wall of the house, on a previously installed beam. The result is a triangular frame that can be further sheathed with any chosen material.

! Important. Use screws and corners as fastening materials, not nails, this will give the frame good rigidity.

DIY installation of soffits

If you plan to sheathe the eaves of the roof yourself, we recommend that you use vinyl soffits and suggest the following algorithm of actions:

  1. Calculate how much material you need, and do not forget that you need to combine blind and perforated elements. When buying, remember that you will need fasteners, clips, and guides.
  2. Attach the guides to the wooden box.First, make a markup so that all the elements are level and proceed to fastening the planks. Attach the F-shaped plank (chamfer) to the plank at the edge of the rafter legs, and the J-shaped plank to the wall.

  3. Next, you need to cut the finishing material. The Bulgarian will cope well with this task. When calculating the length of soffits, you need to remember that they should be 6 mm shorter than the true width of the cornice, so that the material can easily expand with changes in temperature.
  4. Bend the cut elements a little and insert into the chamfer, then into the groove.
  5. For fasteners, take self-tapping screws with a length of 30 mm or more.

  6. At the corners of the overhang, trim the soffits at an angle of 45 ° and join the joints using the H-profile.

! Important. PVC soffits must be installed when the air temperature is above 15 ° C, in the cold the material is easily damaged.
