DIY wood and epoxy products + video and photo. Epoxy resin is the most popular material for creative work. With her help, you can decorate jewelry with your own hands - pendants, earrings and other jewelry.
Furniture items will be no less beautiful - resin goes well with wood, sawdust, shavings, branches and stumps. Products made of epoxy resin and wood will help to decorate every interior, and in addition, the cost of such an exclusive is quite large, and you can even make money on it.
Epoxy is a synthetic oligomer that contains epoxy groups. In terms of the production method, this is very difficult, and it is also a condensation product of bisphenol A, as well as epichlorohydrin. In its original form, the material cannot be used - only the introduction of a hardener can stabilize its condition, and then the polymerization reaction will begin.
Please note that different brands of resin may contain others components - cement, chalk, alabaster, which help to compact the mass. The resin also goes well with aerosil, wood chips, graphite, various dyes and aluminum powder.
The composition may contain oils and other substances, depending on the needs of customers.
For pouring wood and other creative things, colorless resin is perfect, where there are no fillers, but there are modifiers and plasticizers. The material has the following properties:
And now a little about the application.
The resin has a wide range of uses and has found its place in most of the huge industrial sectors:
Resin can be used even at home. It is ideal for the creation and processing of natural wood, industrial and slab furniture. With the help of filling, you can make original stools, tables and chairs, cabinet doors. Souvenirs, watches, jewelry, cutting boards and products for the bathroom, kitchen, tambourines and vases and toys for children will also be beautiful.
You can make products from epoxy resin and wood with your own hands, but you have to try. There are different types of epoxy on sale - imported and domestic. Most of them will work for creating pieces of furniture. it is important to decide whether a transparent or colored resin is needed for decoration. Usually, in order to see the cut of the wood and the texture, colorless compounds are bought.
For example, the high quality YD-128 resin is transparent and colorless, like glass. Epoxy resin MG-Erokh-Strоng is also flawlessly transparent, and is suitable even for jewelry making. By the way, it is these resins that can be combined with colored ones - to make blotches of bright color inside the mass.
These materials will be two-component adhesives. Stabilization of liquid resins occurs by adding a component such as a hardener, which is included in the kit in the second bottle.
It will not work to fill in parts of furniture with thick compositions in forms, so you should not even buy them.
There are five main states of resins:
What is the difference between resin and glue?
In MK for pouring wood products should be applied specifically epoxy resin, but definitely not an adhesive based on the main component.
The main differences between the materials are:
- The setting time of the adhesive cannot be changed, and the freezing rate of the resin can be slowed down or increased.
- The glue begins to turn yellow and the resin remains clear.
- The adhesive composition has a low level of elasticity, but the resin is malleable, and makes it possible to carry out the work required for the master.
- Glue is used to join parts, it will not work to fill the product, and almost any figurine can be made from resin.
And now a little about the pros and cons.
Previously, epoxy resin was used in the form of an adhesive composition for various elements, and it was practically not used in art. After that, they began to fill the floor with such a material, and noted its low level of abrasion, great durability and strength. At the moment, resins with dyes or even in pure form are widely used to obtain unique household products.
The advantages of the resin are as follows:
You know what can be made from wood and epoxy.
Let's look at the disadvantages of the tool. So, you will need to observe the proportions of resin and hardener, since otherwise you can irrevocably spoil the mass. The cost of the resin is quite high, and especially for transparent species. The cost of large finished products is incredibly high. Another disadvantage will be the toxicity of the epoxy.
During work, you will need to use a respirator, goggles, gloves, as well as ventilate the room well, and after hardening, the composition becomes completely safe.
The structure of the wood is heterogeneous, and for this reason, air can begin to accumulate inside its parts, around which a vacuum appears. After a change in temperature, the material begins to expand or contract, therefore, until the moment of perfect solidification on the surface, air bubbles often form, which have come out of the inner cavity of the tree.
Please note that in order to avoid defects, the room temperature should be stabilized for a couple of hours after pouring the resin. It is advisable not to work outside, or choose a time in the afternoon when it is not so hot.
If you need to make a thick layer of resin, then divide the work into a couple of steps. In thin layers, the risk of bubbles is much lower.
Impregnation of wood with epoxy
For high-quality impregnation of wood with the composition, first warm up the material. After the pores of the wood expand, they will perfectly absorb the mass, which will also be very liquid in contact with a heated surface. After the impregnated wood hardens, it should be covered with a finishing layer on top.
During the drying process, you will again need to control the temperature level so that air does not come out to the surface.
Removing air bubbles
Sometimes it happens that bubbles still appear on the top of the filling. It is not necessary to heat the product as this can cause new bubbles to appear. It is better to use a very thin needle and pierce the "balls" of air. Another removal option would be to spray the resin with alcohol from a spray bottle.
Although in this case there is a risk of changing the degree of transparency or color. Large bubbles are removed after the epoxy has hardened - they need to be drilled, cleaned, degreased and quenched again.
For combination with wood, transparent fillings are perfect. Through them all design ideas will be visible - sawdust, crumbs, metal elements. If you decide to add a color scheme, then it is better to buy it of the same brand so that there are no problems with mixing.
Colored materials are usually cloudy and are not used for the main fill. But filling the pores of wood, voids from the passages of bark beetles and knots with a colored composition will look beautiful. For example, you get a unique shelf or bar counter in which cracks are painted with resin with luminescent dyes. In this case, the pieces of furniture will glow by themselves. There are other unusual design techniques, for example, when adding water to the resin, milky stains are obtained.
You can also make beautiful blotches in colored epoxy with drops.
Furniture items with a cut
Furniture that strongly resembles jewelry will look unusual - its details can be cut. For example, a beautiful tree stump can be enclosed in a transparent cube, sanded, polished, and sharpened. The product can be used as a table, chair, or simply put as an unusual interior element.
Solid wood table
Every respectable craftsman should make a table from epoxy resin and wood with his own hands
For the manufacture of a design table, use the technique of painting holes and grooves, which can be done independently.
Any type of wood will do, but you can also use whole pieces or make a worktop from glued strips of wood. To prevent the painted resin from flowing out, the inside of the board should be sealed with paper-type tape, which will need to be removed after the hardener has set. Cured epoxy should be sanded and then varnished.
This way of creating pieces of furniture is much more complicated. Thick plywood or glass is used as the base for decoration, which should be shaped into the future table.
Be sure to stick lightweight decorative elements, as they may begin to float. Next, they make sides that will hold the epoxy on the surface of the base. It will be neatly nailed with furniture nails. Before pouring, the base must be dry and the pores of the wood must be treated with a primer. In one step, fill with a thickness of not more than 1 cm should be made.
Large pieces of wood, stones will need to be hidden in the resin several times, working in layers. Each stage should be carried out two days after the last one. The table can be used only after a week; after the same period, it should be sanded and polished if necessary. Pouring tables should be varnished to reduce the risk of minor defects.
To obtain ordinary or even luminous shelves, boards of a certain size are used.
Areas that are affected by fungus and mold should be removed with a hand tool. Next, the resin should be mixed with dyes and the desired color should be selected. Fill the back of the board with tape, and fill the pores with coloring agent. Once dry, apply transparent resin and finish with varnishing.
Table with a map inside
Such a table is made in the same way, but a cut of a wood trunk with a large number of pores, streaks, cracks.
They also drill holes that mimic the map of the world - oceans and seas. After the product is poured, and the resin is painted in the desired colors.
Ice inside the house
A countertop or bar counter can be altered so that the surface resembles a block of ice. Such plates are molded to make “cracks” from the colored resin. The use of such a product in the interior will be a unique design technique.
