The widespread use of plastic windows made life much easier for burglars. Consumers of such structures receive significant heat savings, and burglars have almost free access to enter the premises. Opening a plastic window with an ordinary screwdriver is a matter of several minutes. And no "reinforced anti-vandal" options for windows save. It must be admitted with regret that plastic windows, taking into account the materials of manufacture and engineering structure, by definition, cannot constitute significant obstacles to the penetration of burglars.
What to do, how to protect your premises?

The most reliable way to insure yourself against unpleasant situations is to install modern video surveillance systems, motion and vibration sensors and connect to central security console. Unfortunately, for our fellow citizens with an average level of income, such services are not affordable. But there is another rather reliable method - to install welded or forged metal bars on the windows.
Forged grating on the window
Forged gratings on windows are rightfully considered one of the most effective and reliable means of protecting the premises from the penetration of unwanted persons. They not only perform a protective function, but also serve as an additional element for the decoration of the facade of various buildings.
Window protection with a grill
There are a huge number of manufacturing options, from using patterns from ordinary standard rolled products to decorating with metal flowers, animals , family monograms, etc. But apart from the listed positive performance characteristics, the products have one problem - the high cost does not allow everyone to have such a beautiful and reliable protection.
Beautiful forged lattice
The lattice as decoration of the facade of the house
Before you pay big money for a product, you need to know about its real properties. And here everything is not so simple, manufacturers are not always honest with customers, they call goods forged with bars that are manufactured using a different technology and have a very distant relationship to traditional forging. Consumers with the word "forged" hope that the grilles are made according to old technologies, and for this they pay a lot of money.
In fact, all of today's forged lattices can be divided into two types:
An example of a metal lattice on a window
To attract buyers, manufacturers have come up with a new technical term - cold forging. This is an ordinary cold bending of rolled products on special devices.
Such devices can be easily made independently and various products can be made not only for windows, but also for fences, benches, armchairs, etc.
The grill is made cold forging
The modern cold forging method is ideal for the creation of typical products in which exclusivity recedes into the background
From a technological point of view, if forge welding is not used to connect individual elements, then they cannot be called forged in the exact sense of the word.
Not more than half of modern blacksmiths have heard of blacksmith welding, and 99% have never used it. This technology requires a special furnace device, for heating it is necessary to use only charcoal, prepare the flux yourself, be able to determine the readiness of the metal for welding. It is determined not by the degree of heating, but by the readiness for welding, these are different concepts, only the most qualified blacksmith can distinguish the metal.
In addition, only low-carbon steels can be welded, and ordinary carbon steels are used for manufacturing. The reason is simple - the latter are much cheaper.
We will not consider design qualities, there is no and cannot be a common opinion. Everyone chooses for himself the option that he likes best and suits the style of the house. But the protective properties of forged windows need to be discussed in detail.
What should you pay attention to so that forged windows are not only a beautiful addition to the facade walls, but also protect the premises from the penetration of unwanted persons?
Fasteners . The vast majority of manufacturers weld wrought-iron gratings on windows to a metal strip up to 5 mm thick and with its help fix the structure to the window opening or on the front wall. When ordering, specify that the T-profile is used instead. This can be either finished rolled products or an additional part welded to the strip. The fact is that it takes a thief a few seconds, not even minutes, to cut a thin strip.
He cuts only two fasteners on one side of the lattice and bends it to the other without any problems - the path to the house is free. Cutting the T-profile takes longer, and you will have to do this from both sides, such a structure cannot be bent.
Grilles with such an attachment do not perform well the protective functions
Lattice parameters. It doesn't matter what the pattern is on the lattice. From a safety point of view, there is one criterion - the distance between the individual rods should not allow free hands with tools to be thrust into them.
Pay attention to the distance between the rods
Pay attention to how the employees of the companies mount the forged gratings. Calmly push a drill through them, drill holes in the wall, insert fasteners, cook, etc. What will prevent a criminal from pushing a grinder on a battery into the same slot and sawing off a "reliable fastener"? If the grill is made in compliance with all safety rules, then it can be installed only from the room with an open window. Installation from the street in a few minutes shows that a skilled burglar will dismantle it several times faster. Why then buy a wrought iron grate? Just for beauty? We understand that there are no obstacles that a professional thief cannot overcome.
But you need to try to at least complicate his life. The more time it takes for him to enter the house, the higher the chances of a timely response to illegal actions. In addition, experienced burglars will not risk dismantling reliable forged gratings, they will look for easier prey.
Frequent arrangement of elements will help protect windows from outside penetration
These simple safety rules do not affect the appearance or spoil it in any way ..
. When placing an order, discuss your requirements with the manufacturer, and he must take them into account. Moreover, the manufacture of high-quality and truly safe grilles takes as much time as ordinary ones.
Choose quality products with reliable fastening
Forged lattices can be stationary, hinged and sliding. The first are the most reliable, who are the second and third have claims.
But stationary ones also have a big drawback - during emergencies, people cannot evacuate the premises through the window. These features should be considered when choosing a specific type of forged gratings. Hinged and sliding doors must be additionally locked. Each lock is another gift for thieves, it is a matter of seconds to open it for them. Moreover, often home owners forget to close it altogether.

Basic types of attaching grilles
There are two options for installing window bars on windows, we will consider both, and you decide which one to choose. Let's start with a simpler and faster one. For work, you will need a drill with a perforator, a victorious drill for the diameter of metal dowels or anchors, a portable welding machine and a little paint to match the color of the lattice.

It is inconvenient to install alone, call an assistant, he should be outside the house and hold the window bars. The slopes on the windows in our example are plastered with a cement-sand mortar.
Grilles before installation
Step 1. Remove all items from the windowsill, open the window. Cover the external drain with film or paper, protect it from dust. It is better to protect yourself from contamination than to waste time cleaning.
Lean the grill against the window opening, mark the fixing points. Pay attention that the grille is parallel to the front wall. The outer side can be in the same plane with the facade wall or protrude beyond it. It all depends on the design features of the forged lattice.
Remove the grate, drill holes. The depth of the holes should exceed the length of the spacers of the dowels by about 2-3 cm, otherwise they may not fully enter them, dust interferes. The drill will never remove the dust completely, a little remains in any case. The great depth does not harm the wall, but it shortens the installation process.
Step 4 .
Insert the spacers of the dowels or anchors into the holes, lift the grill and lean it in place in the window. If it is difficult for the helper to hold, have him place any supports underneath.
Step 5. Insert the bolts one by one into the holes.
Do not drive the bolts all the way until all of the holes are inserted. If you made a mistake with the markings, then you can move the grill a little to one side or the other. When all the bolts are in place, hammer or tighten them all the way.
Step 6. Weld the heads of the bolts to the metal plates.
There is no need to scald the entire perimeter, just drip in several places. If there are "snot" from welding, then grind them off with a circular grinder. Be very careful when welding if plastic materials have been used to clad walls or windows. Cover them with metal, and on top with a damp cloth. Watch in which direction sparks fly and take additional protective measures.
The hole in the plastic does not touch, you will have to change the entire panel or other finishing element.
The installation process of the gratings
Step 7. Paint the cooled metal with paint to match the lattice to protect against corrosion.
In wooden walls, you can use large screws or ordinary nails for fastening. Do not worry that such fasteners are less reliable, they are not.
The fact is that the hardware works for shearing, not for pulling. For shear, any type of fastening can withstand great efforts.
If the slopes are sheathed with plastic clapboard, then they will have to be dismantled before installing the grating. Dismantle before ordering a forged lattice, taking into account the dimensions of the walls, you need to adjust the parameters of the placement of fixation strips. If this is not done, then there will be big problems during installation, the strips will have to be unbend to the sides, and for this their length may be insufficient.
The manufacturers did not provide for such actions. The installation itself is done in the above way. Reinstall the removed panels after installation. When installing the plastic panels, you need to cut holes for the passage of metal strips.
Now we can consider a better way to install the grille.
The preparatory work and the list of tools are no different from the above method.
Step 1. Attach the grill to the window slopes, draw lines with a pencil along the metal fastening strips. Take away the grate.
Fitting the swing grille frame
According to the dimensions of the lines, cut a groove in the wall with a depth of 3- 4 cm. Make it a little wider than the strip, leave room for "maneuver" in case of small mistakes when taking measurements.
Step 3. Drill the holes, fix the grille.
Fixing the frame
Work is carried out according to the level (in the photo magnetic, attached to the frame)
Hinging the grille sash
Carefully remove all the dust from the groove, prepare a cement-sand mortar.
Practical advice. The thickness of the new plaster is small; cracks may appear in the places where it adjoins to metal surfaces. They arise due to thermal expansions or minor structural vibrations. It is simple to prevent this unpleasant phenomenon - cover the metal strip with a sealant, the layer thickness is several millimeters.
The sealant is flexible enough to compensate for dimensional changes. In addition, plaster adheres perfectly to it.
Step 5. After the sealant has set, seal the groove with a small spatula. Before that, its edges need to be moistened with water; on dry concrete or brick, the plaster does not hold well.
Press the mortar with great force, do not allow air pockets to form.
Step 6. Wait 5-6 minutes for a slight setting of the solution. Next, carefully line the edges of the new plaster with the slopes with a clean sponge. Use a washcloth to smooth out the joints until the plane is perfectly flat.
Plaster of slopes
After the mortar has set, paint the place of fixation with the same paint as the slopes. If the color does not match, then buy a new one and paint all the slopes. It never hurts to update their look.
Tint the grille with paint
You can find options for the manufacture of forged grilles with attachment directly to the front wall. This is a less reliable fastening method, but technologically simpler.
The fixing algorithm in this case is identical, only the holes need to be drilled not in the slopes, but in the supporting wall. There is only one moment. When taking measurements for the lattice, it is necessary to provide that the fasteners are not very close to the window opening, otherwise the corner of the plaster on the slopes may break off, the fixation will be unreliable.
Example of installed grille
The need for dismantling may arise when replacing outdated welded metal gratings with new forged models or when there is a reluctance to use more methods of passive protection of buildings from the penetration of unwanted persons. Active electronic security measures are considered to be more effective and versatile.
It is rather difficult to remove forged grilles, especially properly mounted ones. Often, during such work, architectural structures are significantly damaged; in order to restore them, a complex of construction measures has to be performed. How to dismantle forged gratings with minimal damage to the facade walls?
Step 1. Carefully examine the window, determine the place and method of fixing the product. Prepare your tools.
For dismantling, you will need a drill with a perforator, a grinder, and a pry bar. It is possible to close up holes in the walls with any cement-sand compositions.
Step 2. During dismantling, you need to perform two tasks: preserve the forged grating as much as possible and make minimal damage on the slopes.
The least valuable element of the grille is the fastening strip. No need to feel sorry for her, cut off with a grinder in any convenient place. When the grating is reused, a new strip is welded on. The main thing is not to damage the window slopes and the grill frame.
Metal elements are heavy, hold them with one hand, and it is impossible to cut with the other. Don't work alone, always have a helper. Follow the safety rules, the grinder is a very traumatic tool, no work is worth the injuries received. Take the cut off wire rack to the storage location. Make sure that the cutting blade rotates towards the worker.
In the correct position, the sparks should be directed towards the worker. This is not entirely pleasant, many people change the direction of rotation in such a way that the sparks are directed in the opposite direction from the working direction. It is strictly forbidden to do so. The fact is that such a rotation of the disc causes the grinder to explode, it jumps out of the metal and can seriously injure the hand.
Proceed to remove anchors or metal expansion anchors. In most cases, they are welded to the plates. Carefully cut the weld spot as deep as possible into the strip body; you need to achieve such a state when its thin remnants are removed from the anchor. If the welding work was done by a responsible master, then you have to sweat, the seam will be deeply welded.
Removing the window grilles
Now you can start removing the anchor. These are the most difficult and time consuming jobs. There are times when it will not be possible to completely remove the anchor, you need to be ready for this and not waste effort and time, let part of the anchor body remain in the wall. It is easier to repair it than to completely remove it.
Punch a hole around the anchor with a punch, the diameter of the recess should allow the grinder to reach the metal. If this is difficult, then the bolt can be cut off by electric welding. Set the amperage to the highest possible value and blow off the molten metal using an ordinary electrode. Before this, the window sill and drain are reliably protected from molten metal. You can use a piece of sheet steel or a damp cloth.
Keep in mind that metal droplets fly a long distance after striking the sheet metal.
Step 7. Wait for the metal to cool down. During this time, you can prepare the grout to seal the holes.
Clean the holes from construction dust and metal residues, if they are deep, you can use a vacuum cleaner. Be sure to moisten the walls with plenty of water until the brick stops quickly absorbing it.
Step 9. If the pits are deep, then they will have to be repaired in two stages, otherwise the dried solution will surely crack. In the first step, the thickness of the mortar does not matter, fill the hole until about a centimeter remains until it is full.
Allow time for the solution to harden. Cracks appearing on the surface are not a problem, they are repaired at the second stage.
Step 10. After the first mortar has cured, proceed to the final leveling. Work with a metal trowel.
Ideally, a slightly damp sponge can smooth the line between the new mortar and the old surface. After a few strokes, rinse it in clean water, otherwise the remaining solution will leave on the surface of the grooves. Do not use grout, it will only stain the entire surface of the slope, and the result will be unsatisfactory. Grout is used when plastering large surfaces.
Plastering window slopes outside
When it is planned to re-install the metal lattice on the same window, then the fastening strips must be displaced, fixing to the wall must be done in a different place. The distance from the previous one is at least ten centimeters.
